Reno, Nev. – Gilroy wrestlers had a strong opening day Thursday in the Tournament of Champions.
Jesse Delgado, Martin Gonzalez and Hunter Collins each won twice to remain in contention for top finishes in the prestigious tournament that always draws some of the best wrestlers from throughout the U.S.
Delgado decisioned Paul Gomez of Liberty 6-2 and then won by technical fall over Jake Henrich of Foothill PC, 20-5. The 103-pound freshman advanced to face Holden Packard of Mountain View, Idaho.
Gonzalez started strong winning by technical decision over Charlie Demore of De La Salle, 21-4. He then decisioned Doug DelPorto of Galena 3-1. The 119-pound sophomore next faces Frank Lomas of Bakersfield.
Collins, who finished fifth last year at 171, started with two falls. The junior decked Amos Margosian of Redwood in 1:14, and then pinned Bryce Wilson of Calvary Chapel in 3:30. Next up for Collins is Jon-Kyle Shutz of McQueen, Nev.
At 112, Nicolo Naranjo won his first match when he pinned Tyson Hamilton of Springville, Utah, in 3:44. Naranjo was pinned in his next match by Kegan Handlovic of perennial Pennsylvania power Easton.
In other bouts involving Mustangs, at 125, Rudy Maldanado got two wins before losing by decision to John Garza; at 140, Travis Sakamoto lost by fall in his first-round match; at 145, Austin Gubrud lost by major decision in his first round match; at 152, Fabian Laredo lost in the first round; at 160, Ethan Ogle got a pin and then lost by decision; and at 215, Jesse Rogers lost in the first round.
Wrestling continues today. Pigtail rounds begin at 9am with championship rounds to start an hour later.
