Gilroy – The Gilroy High Mustangs volleyball team won its sixth straight league game Thursday night with a 25-11, 25-18, 25-12 victory against visiting Salinas High.

The Mustangs will play at Seaside Monday in a rescheduled match and then will face visiting Hollister Tuesday in a contest that will determine first place. San Benito was the only league team to defeat Gilroy this year.

“Every game from now on is so important because we got tight race,” said GHS coach Craig Martin. “It’s going to be fun. If we play good consistent volleyball we’ll do really well. We can’t afford to slip up even once,”

With the victory, Gilroy (21-8, 10-1 TCAL) moves into first place in the league. San Benito (9-1) was off and will play Palma (7-3) Monday. Monterey (10-2) is also in contention for a title.

Against Salinas (0-10 TCAL) Thursday, setter Gene Losongco had 26 assists and five kills.

“We wanted to spread it out a little,” Martin said. “It was a good opportunity to work on some things. Gene kept distributing the ball around.”

Vinny Delorenzo and Ryan Chisolm had eight kills each. Travis Graham had seven and Dominic Jackson added six.
