SALINAS – Pins and needles will be what Gilroy softball sits on in anticipation of whether or not it receives a berth into the Central Coast Section playoffs.
But if Thursday was the last time the team takes the field this season, it was an excellent way to go out.
The Mustangs mercy-ruled Alisal for a 10-0 win to boost their regular season record to 13-12-1 overall, 6-6 in the Tri-County Athletic League. A loss, unlikely since Alisal (2-20) hadn’t won a TCAL contest up to that point, would have been devastating.
“If we had not won, we wouldn’t be .500 so we wouldn’t be able to qualify (for CCS),” Gilroy coach Catherine Hallada said.
Instead, the Mustangs will await word from the CCS selection meeting taking place Saturday. Thursday’s victory followed a tough 6-4 loss to Salinas on Tuesday, showing resiliency on Gilroy’s part.
“Right now, our last two practices have been low key and fun and [Thursday’s] game the girls went out there and had fun,” Hallada said.
The Mustangs were led by pitcher Sam Parraz, who threw a complete-game shutout featuring five strikeouts, and a long list of productive batters. Alissa Castro had two singles and two RBI, Melanie Morelos had a single and triple for two RBI, and Emily Castro and Sarah Lira both had two singles for an RBI each. Dani Hemeon rounded out the bunch with a single for an RBI.
Now, the Mustangs will await word on whether another game awaits.
“It just depends on the power points and where we fall based on other teams at this point,” Hallada said. “We definitely have a chance.”
