Gilroy – It couldn’t have come as much of a surprise … Gilroy and Hollister wrestlers were seeded either No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3 in 13 out of 14 weight divisions at Thursday’s seeding meeting for Saturday’s TCAL Championships at San Benito High.

What’s more, Mustangs and Haybalers were slotted in the top two spots in four divisions, while just one weight class, 171, will have a No. 1 seed who is not from Gilroy or Hollister – Live Oak’s John Redmond.

As expected, Gilroy wrestlers stack the seedings in the lower weights and have eight No. 1’s overall. Hollister has five, including Ryan Dunn at 215 and Jack Mahan in the heavyweight class. Gilroy placed a surprise No. 2 seed in that division, Jeremy Sabla. The freshman fills in for Luis Chavez, and “doesn’t even know he’s wrestling yet,” joked GHS assistant coach Mike Koester Thursday.
