GILROY – Without the services of two of its best players in senior captains Elise Ogle and Mandi Jo Torres, the Gilroy High Varsity field hockey team turned to its third captain – and she delivered.
Junior Dani Hemeon produced four goals as the Mustangs defeated Stevenson 7-0 on Monday at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.
“We want to get Elise and Mandi back on the field as soon as possible,” Hemeon said. “Obviously they are a huge asset to our team.”
Katelyn Nebesnick got the Mustangs rolling with an early first half goal.
GHS went up 2-0 on a Hemeon rip from the top of the circle on a short- corner try. The junior captain teamed up with Emily Costa on a well-executed give-and-go play to make it 3-0 before the half.
“We had a lot of good give-and-go’s today,” Hemeon said. “We passed the ball really well.”
Costa had two assists in the game.
The Mustangs tacked on four more scores in the second half. Goals by Shayna Robledo and Alex Rose were sandwiched between two more Hemeon tallies.
The game was called with 6:22 left to play because of darkness as two of the light towers would not function.
The Mustangs play their final home game of the regular season against Santa Catalina on Wednesday.
