Monterey – Gilroy staged a second-half rally Wednesday but it was too little and too late.

The Mustangs’ boys water polo team fell to Robert Louis Stevenson 12-7 in the Tri-County Athletic League quarterfinals at Santa Catalina.

The Pirates got off to a quick start, grabbing a 7-0 lead in the second quarter before GHS began its comeback. Goals by Austin Gubrud and Eric Boe brought the Mustangs (6-8) within 8-2 at halftime.

Gubrud and Daniel Shields each had two goals and Boe added another as GHS outscored RLS 5-4 in the second half.

Gubrud and Shields also had assists for the Mustangs, who finish their season with a meet at 3:30pm today.
