Playing against fellow Tri-County Athletic League members at a windy Salinas Fairways Golf Course Tuesday, the Mustangs finished in fourth for the fourth time this season. The team also currently sits in fourth place in the league standings.
Mitch Goldsmith led the way for Gilroy, which finished with an overall score of 219, by shooting 41, followed closely by Tyler Park (43), Wes Theilges (44), Jonathan Higgins (45) and Chris Martinez (46).
Palma once again placed as the top team of the day as it shot a 189. San Benito finished in second (196), Salinas took third (208), Alisal landed in fifth (231) and Alvarez rounded out the group with a score of 242.
“We know come league finals in a couple of weeks, we will be playing for individual honors to qualify for CCS,” Gilroy coach Eric Kuwada said. “(The players) will have to finish in the top three individual scores to qualify. I think they will need to shoot in the high 70s, and maybe 80 will qualify. For the next few weeks, work has to be done to polish the weak areas of their games.”
Before taking part in the Aptos Tourney on Monday, the team will take to the links with the community in the Gilroy Fundraising Tourney being held Saturday at Gilroy Golf Course.
Those who take part will play in six-person scrambles before a barbecue dinner and raffle. Carts are included in the $80 fee to play, with all proceeds going to Gilroy High’s boys and girls golf teams.
“All the players will be out there and we have some prizes donated for the community,” Kuwada said.
Spots are still available and can be secured by calling Don DeLorenzo at GGC at (408) 848-0490. Check-in is at 12:30 p.m.
