Gilroy High baseball lost 16-8 to the Palma Chieftains Friday afternoon in Salinas, falling short in its bid for a comeback by allowing five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Gilroy was down 11-8 at the time.

“We just have to keep battling for seven innings,” Gilroy coach Clint Wheeler said.

Taylor Chris started the game for Gilroy but lasted just three innings. Reliever James Lafuente came away with the loss.

Lukas Fortino, Danny Contreras, Derek Engen and Eric Vegas all recorded two-hit games for Gilroy, while Kevin Grove hit his fourth home run of the season.

Palma improved to 21-7 overall and 14-3 in the Tri-County Athletic League with the win. Gilroy, which hosts rival San Benito today at 4 p.m., dropped to 11-16 overall, 9-7 in the TCAL.
