Patty Olvera is beginning to find her groove on the mound.

The senior righthander tossed her second consecutive shutout Friday as Gilroy beat Monta Vista 4-0 in the opening round of the Charlie Miguel Tournament at Twin Creeks.

“She did a fantastic job,” GHS coach Catherine Hallada said of Olvera. “She also hit a big triple for us.”

Meanwhile, the Mustangs (11-4) took a page from the Notre Dame playbook a day earlier, getting off to a fast start. Like the Spirits, Gilroy scored three times in the first inning to gain control early. Olvera did the rest.

“Our offense was off and on,” Hallada said. “But we got a few good hits early and we got off to a good start. We’ve been telling the girls they need to do it right away. We have had a tendency to come from behind more often.”

There was no coming from behind this game, because Olvera was doing what no other pitcher had been able to do against the Matadors (3-4-1) this season – shutting them out. Olvera, who has not yielded an earned run in her last 18 innings, allowed six hits and struck out five with no walks. It was her third shutout of the season.

Lauryn Chris had two hits to lead the Mustang offense. The junior second baseman leads Gilroy with 22 hits and nine multi-hit games. Amanda Tellez and Alicia Reese each collected hits and scored runs.

Defensively, the Mustangs played error-free ball in winning by shutout for the fifth time this season.

“It’s starting to seem like we either get a shutout or lose,” Hallada said. “Our defense continues to be very solid.”

Gilroy has two games today. The Mustangs face Branham at 3pm and Santa Clara at 6:30 pm.
