Gilroy High’s field hockey team is no longer flawless, but it has captured its first championship of the season.
Going 5-0-1 in six games at the Longhorn Roundup held at Leigh High School on Friday and Saturday, the Mustangs mounted a comeback to tie the host school in its second game, 2-2, before rolling off four straight wins, the last coming against Leigh by a score of 2-1.
“I was very impressed and proud of my team with their heart, determination, and fitness – especially after playing, literally, three hours of continuous hockey and winning the whole tournament,” GHS coach Adam Gemar said.
Tournaments often hold shorter games to make sure teams are able to play in at least a certain number of contests.
Senior Laura Spellman and junior Elise Ogle were named to the All-tournament team, helping Gilroy improve to 8-0-1 on the season. The Mustangs topped Corning 4-0 in the first game, Homestead by the same score in the third, Prospect 1-0 in the fourth, and Saratoga 2-0 in the semifinals. It was the second time this season Gilroy has beaten Saratoga. The first was a 3-0 win on Wednesday.
Saratoga finished in third place and Prospect finished in fourth.
“Our special team, short corners, are improving and I only see it getting stronger as the season progresses,” Gemar said. “I was able to get some good looks at our bench players who are starting to come together and improve at all levels of the game.”
The Mustangs will have two crucial contests this week as they take on Monterey today at 5:30 p.m. before a potential Central Coast Section playoff matchup against Archbishop Mitty at 4 p.m. on Thursday. Both games will be played at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex in Gilroy.
