It was a blowout victory against the bottom feeders of the Tri-County Athletic League, but holding any team to 12 points over four quarters is an accomplishment.

Especially when one considers where the Gilroy High girls basketball team was just a few weeks ago.

The Mustangs beat the Alvarez Eagles 49-12 Thursday night, with every player on the Gilroy roster contributing something positive.

“A lot of our bench got to play … they basically played the whole game and were able to keep up the fast-paced tempo we play,” Gilroy assistant coach Laura Hennessee said. “They executed really well – everybody.”

The team played so well, in fact, that in the process of winning the contest to move to 6-4 in the TCAL, the Mustangs also improved to a .500 record (11-11) for the first time since Dec. 28.

Using a full-court press in the first half to force turnovers and bad shots, the Mustangs found themselves with a 29-4 lead at halftime.

Coaches decided to pull back to a halfcourt defense in the second half, as well as get reserves more live-game experience.

While Hennessee said everyone contributed to the victory, she did single out one player’s performance.

“Honestly, it was really all-around but one person I thought really stood out was Stephanie Solorio,” the coach said. “She really came out aggressive offensively and defensively.”

The Mustangs next game is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Salinas.
