SALINAS – Gilroy softball’s losing streak was extended to five games in a row by Salinas Thursday, as the Mustangs fell 2-0 to the hosting Cowboys.

The Mustangs are now 8-9-1 overall on the season, 1-3 in the Tri-County Athletic League.

“I think were temporarily struggling,” Gilroy coach Catherine Hallada said. “Our hitting isn’t quite on right now, but I think it just takes one or two games, which I’m hoping might be this week, to wake them up again.”

The schedule won’t get much easier in the coming weeks, as Gilroy still has one game remaining with Notre Dame and North Salinas, and two games against San Benito due to an April 7 rainout. That game has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 30.

The Mustangs will have a good chance to get back on track today at 4:30 p.m. when they host Alisal (2-13 overall, 0-5 TCAL). Hallada believes reaching the Central Coast Section playoffs is still a possibility, but it will require rolling off some big wins.

“We have to beat Salinas, we have to beat North Salinas, and try to beat Hollister and Notre Dame,” Hallada said. “I think it’s something we can do.

“I feel that [we] have so much more talent and so much more potential than how we’ve been playing.”
