The Gilroy High girls soccer team opened it’s Tri-County Athletic League schedule Wednesday with a 5-0 win at Alvarez.
The Mustangs (2-2-2, 10-0 TCAL) were up just 1-0 at the half from a goal by Ariana Vera. But they erupted in the second to drop Alvarez to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the TCAL.
“Their goalie had four great saves in the first half,” said Gilroy High coach Jose Hernandez. “The only thing we weren’t doing was finishing. We had a number of shots in the first. We just weren’t putting them away.”
Kristi Figueroa scored a pair of goals for the Mustangs and had an assist. Erin Slattery and Jenessa Barnes also added goals for Gilroy.
In the second half, Gilroy moved the ball around more and and finished strong at the net.
“We started looking for passes and actually completed them,” Hernandez said. “We were just trying to keep in a rhythm. Everyone got to play for at least 15 minutes. It was nice because some of them have not had a lot of playing time in the last two games.”
Two of those players who stepped up were freshmen forwards/outside midfielders Breanna Rose and Alexandria Maldonado.
“They did a good job of pressuring to the ball and working on areas they have been weak on,” Hernandez said.
Gilroy will continue league play on Friday against visiting San Benito, who beat Notre Dame 2-0 on Wednesday.
“They have the same style they have been playing the last few years,” Hernandez said. “We will look at pressuring them. We’ll be working on passing and communication. We’re at the point where we’re really just adjusting to things right now.”
