Dear Editor:

Mr. Howard Cowles and the and Neighbors for Responsible Development seem to be opposed to a second high school being built at Day Road for their own selfish reasons. All of the arguments about traffic congestion, air quality, quantity of life, etc. apply to any other location in the city. Most of the new housing built in Gilroy over the last decade has been in the Northwest Quad.

I would be interested to know how many of those opposed to the Day Road location have recently moved that section of Gilroy. New housing in that area has created a need for a second high school and it will benefit those homeowners. It makes perfect sense that it be built in that area, to minimize traffic that would occur elsewhere, if it was located at Arroyo Circle, for example. I haven’t heard of an organized effort by residents near the existing high school complaining because of the increased enrolment and the attendant quality of life issues due a new housing from the Northwest Quad, but NRD is making just that argument.

In the last few years the development Eagle Ridge, a new middle school, and housing project for seniors have all sprung up not more that one half mile from my home. Santa Teresa has undergone widening and improvement to accommodate the anticipated traffic. I do not view this change as a major degradation to my quality of life. Accept the fact that increased population requires development of neighbor schools and stop acting like a bunch of NIMBYs.
