It may be early in the season but not too early for Gilroy volleyball coach Sue Grogan to tinker with her lineup.

Employing a different scheme from two nights earlier, the Mustangs defeated Soquel 25-20, 25-23, 25-23, Thursday to gain their first win.

“The boys played really well,” Grogan said. “We mixed it up. Instead of using two setters, we used one and ran a 5-1 so the setter (would rotate) all the way around.”

It worked because Greg Calimpong had 23 assists. But it was a balanced attack that boosted Gilroy, which had dropped a five-game match two days earlier against Sobrato.

Kevin Bruce had nine of the Mustangs’ 25 kills. Shaun O’Neill and Renz Campos each had five kills.

Alfred Medenceles and Steven Archibald had seven service points. And libero Mike Leininger led a strong digging effort.

“The guys picked up where needed,” Grogan said. “Shaun and Renz stepped up their games from Sobrato. We were digging balls right and left. The back row did a good job. Soquel had some big hitters that we were able to neutralize. We definitely played well defensively and were able to do well offensively with our kills.”

Gilroy returns to action Wednesday at Pioneer.
