Now that current principal John Perales will be taking the reins as principal of the new Christopher High School, scheduled to open for the 2009-2010 school year, Kapaku, who is wrapping up his fourth year as vice principal at the middle school, will step into the position.

In closed session at Thursday night’s board meeting, the school board unanimously voted to appoint Kapaku as head of the school. His start date is yet to be determined and Kapaku is looking forward to the transition, he said.

“I’m very psyched,” he said. “I love South Valley. I love the staff, the kids.”

Kapaku is originally from Hawaii and currently resides in Morgan Hill with his wife and two children, a 4-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son. He has previously served as a middle school principal for three years in King City.

“Greg has been really preparing for this job ever since he got there,” board president Rhoda Bress said. “It was a clear choice. He’s been working hand in hand with John Perales. It’s going to be a smooth transition.”

Kapaku’s hopes for the middle school are to continue the process of improving student achievement – a process that is already in progress under the leadership of Perales – and refine the curriculum to provide more rigor for both low and high achieving students.
