Grant money available for youth organizations

Gilroy – The Gilroy Assistance League is ready to help local youth programs in need of funds. GAL is accepting grant requests for the year 2007.

Last year GAL gave out more than $10,000 to various local youth causes.

Written grant requests should specify the amount needed and how the funds will be used.

Grant request forms are available at Gilroy Chamber of Commerce at 7471 Monterey St. in downtown Gilroy.

Serve on the grand jury

Gilroy – The Superior Court of Santa Clara County is seeking volunteers to serve on the 2007-2008 civil grand jury. Volunteers must be residents of the county for one year as of June 28, be U.S. citizens, and be 18 years or older. The term will begin June 28. This service requires 20 to 25 hours per week.

Study Spanish in Spain

Gilroy – Learn or improve your Spanish language skills while you study and travel this summer through the Gavilan College summer program in Sevilla, Spain. Students will earn up to five units of university-transferable college credit while living with a host family. The trip runs from June 3 through 30, and costs about $1,500 plus airfare. An orientation meeting will be held at 9:30am, Saturday.

PCAG meeting slated

San Martin – A Perchlorate Community Advisory Group will meet from 2 to 4pm, March 2 at the San Martin Lion Club Hall, 425 Murphy Avenue .

Competition tests skills

Gilroy – Piano students 8 to 18 years of age are invited to participate in the music department’s second piano competition, March 3 at Gavilan College Theatre.

Division One will be open for students 8 to 10, Division Two for students 11 to 13, and Division Three for those 14 to 18. Entry fee is $25, non refundable, per participant.

Each participant will be expected to have prepared (by memory) two stylistically contrasting pieces.

All contestants will audition the afternoon of the competition.

The winner of Division Three will be invited to play at the Gavilan Bach To Blues concert in March and may be asked to perform for the South Valley Symphony Youth Concert. Cash prizes range from $50 to $500 and will be awarded to the three winners for each division.

Register at St. Mary’s

Gilroy – Registration for St. Mary School, 2007 – ’08, will take place at noon Saturday, March 3 in the school gym, 15 First St.

The school enrolls students in grades K-8. Bring your child’s birth certificate, baptismal certificate (if applicable) and a $25 application fee. The application form can be found on the school Web site, www.stmarygilroy.org or picked up at Registration.

Students in grades First through Eighth will be screened once paperwork is complete; students entering Kindergarten will choose a testing time on either March 10 or March 17.

New stylist at Cherisse’s

Morgan Hill – Jo Godinez has joined the staff of Cherisse’s Hair Salon and Day Spa in Morgan Hill as a Designer-Stylist. Specializing in custom color and custom cut, Godinez initially received her Cosmetology training at the Tulare Beauty College. One of the youngest students to ever be admitted to a Beauty College, Godinez, whose family members own various salons in Tulare, began her pursuit of a Cosmetology license at age 16 while simultaneously attending high school.

Graduating in 2002, Godinez received advanced training in cutting techniques through the Tony and Guy Hair Academy in Long Beach.Godinez and her husband, Rego, are residents of Morgan Hill.
