Educator awarded for dedication to fitness
Longtime educator Pat Vickroy isn’t just a physical education teacher, he’s fitness enthusiast who’s made exercise and healthy living fun for thousands of Gilroy students.
In recognition of Vickroy’s dedication to the health and academic achievement of Gilroy’s youth, the South County Collaborative awarded him the Community Nutrition and Health Award at Thursday night’s board meeting.
“Whether through the implementation of fun and innovative physical activities such as the Jump Rope Challenge or Are You Fitter than a Fifth Grader?, Mr. Vickroy’s approach to physical education provides instruction in motor skills and physical activities that enhance the physical, mental, social and emotional development of his students,” said Lillian Castillo with the Santa Clara County Public Health Department.
Repaving on U.S. 101 starts Monday
The California Department of Transportation will begin work Monday to replace the concrete pavement on U.S. 101 from Buena Vista Avenue – also known as Rucker Avenue – to the Cochrane Road overcrossing in Morgan Hill. The work is scheduled for weekdays 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and will be completed in early November, weather permitting. There will be various lane and ramp closures throughout the duration of the project. Signs will be in place to warn drivers of closures and detours. Motorists should use caution when traveling through the area.
Efforts to give back still on track
This summer’s Garden Layout tour had almost 600 guests and collected $2,600 plus many barrels of food to donate to homeless food programs in Santa Clara and San Benito counties. Tim Csabanyi of “Movie Mix Production” volunteered his time to create a one-hour video of the model railroads that were on display. The DVDs, which are available now, are $10.95, plus $2 shipping and handling if delivered through mail.
