The Gilroy Chamber of Commerce last month honored a local volunteer who spends approximately 12 hours a week cleaning up graffiti and ripping down garage sale signs posted illegally on public property.

Council to discuss rezoning land as ‘high density’

In order to meet certain state requirements of low-income housing, the City Council will discuss at their regular meeting Monday adapting the housing section of the general plan by rezoning 26 acres within the city to “high density residential” raising the minimum unit per acre from 16 to 20 in these areas.

A split Gilroy City Council asked city staff Monday night not to pursue bids for a traffic study on Welburn Avenue - one of the city's busiest streets - because of concerns over the study's price tag and whether the results would foster any changes.

One hundred firefighters on scene to battle five acre fire on Eagle Ridge

One hundred firefighters from Gilroy Fire Department, Cal Fire and other departments in the county are fighting a five-acre fire burning thick brush on top of the ridge. The GFD has reported no injuries or structures in danger at the moment. An investigation into how the fire started has not yet begun.  As of last night, 22 fire engines were employed to fight the blaze.
