50s Chevrolets on display at this year’s Taste of Morgan Hill

The Taste of Morgan Hill’s 23rd annual Custom & Classic Car Show will feature a trio of favorite sock-hopping, drive-in-parking, apple pie-transporting, oldies-thumping American beauties - the 1955, 1956 and 1957 Chevrolets.

Itchy Dogs – Is Food the Problem?

Many dog owners work hard to make their pets comfortable and happy, so it can be frustrating when a dog is constantly itching and distressed. Dr. Adam Patterson, clinical assistant professor and Chief of Dermatology at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences Small Animal Clinic, explained how some perpetually itchy dogs may suffer from food allergies.

Alfredo F. Cuellar October 11, 1932 – August 12, 2012

Alfredo F. Cuellar passed away suddenly on Sunday, August 12, 2012. He was preceded in death by his wife Esperanza Cuellar, his parents Sofio and Estella Cuellar and sister Jane Arguijo. He is survived by his daughter Romelia Cuellar, grandchildren Matthew Cuellar Sanchez and Erica Cuellar Sanchez and great-granddaughter Kailee Skye all of Gilroy. He is also survived by his brother Guadalupe Cuellar, sister Carolina Zepeda both of San Antonio, TX and sister Guadalupe (Mico) Zepeda of Oklahoma. He had many nieces and nephews in the local area as well as in San Antonio, TX.

Romolo (Ray) Alcini January 13, 1915 – August 7, 2012

Romolo (Ray) Alcini born January 13,1915 in Roseto degli Abruzzi, Italy. Imigrated to America at age 14 and lived, worked, and went to school in Michigan until 1949 when he moved to California. Preceded in death by his first wife Emma, and 5 brothers and sisters. Survived by his two sons Ray (Diana) and Rick and 3 grandchildren. He remarried in 1995 and is survived by wife Anne and three daughters, Judith (Bob Profeta), Wendy, and Aileene (Nick Boffa) and seven grandchildren. Ray was a decorated war hero who served his country in WW2 as a member of the elite OSS. His fluency in the Italian language made him a valuable asset to the U.S. Army and he participated in numerous successful missions throughout Europe during the war. After the war and settling in California, Ray became a successful business owner. He farmed orchards in Santa Clara Valley then started a rubbish disposal and landfill business, and ultimately ended up owning a sheet metal fabrication company. Ray enjoyed golf, playing the accordion and mandolin, bocce ball, and traveling and was accomplished in all. Those whose life he touched, whether family, friends, or business associates, all knew him as an honest, loving, generous person who possessed a wit and sense of humor that made us all laugh and enjoy every moment in his presence. Family and friends were the most important things in Ray's life and he will always hold a special place in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Julia Maheu October 31, 1931 – August 10, 2012

Graveside services Friday, August 17, 2012 at 1:00 P.M. at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial services to be announced and held at a later date.

Jennie Filice June 24, 1921 – August 10, 2012

Jennie Filice passed away peacefully on August 10, 2012 at the age of 91 in Gilroy. She was the beloved wife of the late Adolph (Eddie) Filice. Loving mother of Geri Johansen, Gennaro (Kathy) Filice, James Filice (Sue Rowland) and Mark (Diana) Filice. Dearest grandmother of Heather Miller, Brandy Begin, Scott Filice, Christopher Filice and Kevin Filice and 5 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank & Teresa Filice; brother, Louis Filice; sisters, Mary Cunha, Anne Borba; daughter-in-law, Linda Slee Filice and son-in-law Larry Johansen. She was devoted to her family which always came first. A wonderful homemaker who also worked alongside her husband, Eddie in the family owned fruit stand. After his death she worked at Nob Hill Drugs, Plaza Drugs and alongside her granddaughter Paige at Jockey Outlet. She was a member of St. Mary Parish, Catholic Ladies Society and the Italian Catholic Federation. She was a sweet, kind loving woman, a friend to so many and will be missed by all. 

Animal ‘Olympians’ win medals of their own

Faster, higher, stronger. The best human athletes in the world, many of them from California, have proven their worthiness of an Olympic medal. But there are other “athletes” all around us – our local native wildlife includes some with amazing feats worthy of a medal, and in fact, one of them already holds a world record. Ferguson Road closed through November

The California Department of Transportation closed Ferguson Road in Gilroy on Aug. 13 and it will remain closed through early November. This continuous closure is necessary to install signals, widen shoulders and through lanes near the intersection of Highway 152 and Ferguson Road, according to a Caltrans press release.
