Banding important for birds
The splendid red-tailed hawk was flying over the fields of Coyote Valley … with a band on. Early in February, the hawk was discovered along the side of Santa Teresa Boulevard unable to fly but with no apparent external injuries.
Cleaning up the messy signs
The Gilroy City Council is adding teeth and toughening up Gilroy's sign ordinance to include a ban on a wide variety of signage, from prohibiting A-frame signs thoughout the city – including downtown – to axing costumed sign waving human advertisers on public property.

Recreation department awarded
The City of Gilroy Recreation Department has been selected as a 2013 California Park and Recreation Society Award of Excellence recipient for The City of Gilroy Recreation Department Monthly Electronic Newsletter in the awards category of Marketing and Communications. The department was honored, along with Monica Sendejas (second from left), who created the newsletter, and proofreaders Judy Mireles-Janisch (second from right), Sondra Banks and Maria De Leon.
