‘Because she is one of us’

Research is constantly trying to determine why thousands of people are inexplicably diagnosed with cancer every year. It really didn’t make sense why Morgan Hill resident Teresa Glover, 39 – a former Gilroy local and longtime fundraiser for cancer research and awareness – was told she had stage 3 non-Hodgkins lymphoma Dec. 18, 2013.

‘Quality of Life’ tax concerns

The Editorial Board has serious concerns about the direction the fledgling “Quality of Life” sales tax or bond proposal is headed. What began as Mayor Don Gage’s idea to see whether Gilroyans would support some sort of tax increase to pay for capital improvement projects has morphed into a tax hike that would support city operations, specifically police and fire protection.

Homicide charges dropped

Last week’s fatal shooting in Las Animas Veterans Park – initially reported by police as an attack on a 68-year-old Gilroy man depicted by friends and family as “helpful” and “loving” – is now being examined in an entirely new light, according to court files detailing the event as an act of self defense in the face of violence and racism.

County eyes Saint Louise

Santa Clara County officials are in “high level discussions” with Daughters of Charity Health System executives to look into the purchase of Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy, according to County Board of Supervisors President Mike Wasserman.

California grape growers set record in 2013

For the second year in a row, California’s grape harvest is expected to set a record. The Preliminary Grape Crush Report indicates the state crushed 4,685,075 tons of grapes in 2013, up 7 percent from the record set in 2012. Red wine varieties continue to account for the majority of production with 2,405,942 tons crushed statewide in 2013 and white wine varieties contributed 1,824,625 tons. A small amount of raisin grape and table grape varieties made up the remainder of grapes crushed for wine in California in 2013.

Decluttering Has Advantages

It may be hard to accept, but taste in décor varies greatly between people.  What is comfortable to one person is undoubtedly clutter to another.  The Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines clutter in part, as “a large amount of things that are not arranged in a neat or orderly way; a crowded or disordered collection of things.”

Local restaurant owner scammed out of $1,000

A local restaurant owner was scammed out of nearly $1,000 Feb. 9 after she received a threatening phone call, according to Gilroy Police Department records.
