Prep Roundup: Jan. 2

Christopher's Adam Mena took home his first place finish of the year — and that's not all.  The 126-lb. wrestler earned the Outstanding Wrestler Award after his top finish at the James Lick Varsity Tournament Dec. 20. The Cougars finished third as a team.  Mena was one of seven Christopher wrestlers to finish in the top five at the tournament. Dean Agustin (106) finished second, while Justin Garza (113), Keanu Calimpong (132) and Anthony Figueroa (145) all took third. Tobias Mendoza (138) and Jacob Myers (152) finished fourth. Zack Taylor (195) went 0-2 at the tournament. Cougar wrestlers were also competing at the Varsity Tournament of Champions in Reno on Dec. 20 and 21. Jimmie Lopez (113) finished 4-2, while Felipe Duenas (106) was 2-2. Mario Anchando (126), Raul Meza (132) and heavyweight Navi Pannu all went 0-2.  Christopher will compete at the Doc Buchanon Invitational at 9 a.m. Friday at Clovis High School. 

New Year’s Eve bank robber escapes with undisclosed amount of cash

The Gilroy Police Department responded to a bank robbery at approximately 3:49 p.m. Tuesday at the Union Bank located at 8000 Santa Teresa Blvd., according to a press release from the department. No injuries were reported during the robbery.

America’s aging farmers

According to the 2007 Census of Agriculture, the average age of the principal farm operator in America is 57.1 years old. That same census data shows the majority of farm operators are between 45 and 64 and the fastest growing group of farm operators is those 65 years and older.

Long-term unemployment severed

Roughly 1.3 million Americans, including more than 8,800 Santa Clara County residents, are starting off the New Year on a bleak note after a federal program extending long-term unemployment benefits was shut down Saturday.

Fundraising to fuel re-opening

Grammy award-winning songwriter Don Henry will headline a Jan. 15 benefit concert to help raise funds for the planned re-opening of the historic Granada Theater in downtown Morgan Hill, according to Vice Chair Renee Carrillo of the Morgan Hill Granada Preservation Society.

Christmas Day homicide suspect charged with murder

A 21-year-old man was formally charged with murder in the Christmas Day killing of a woman who had a restraining order against him - marking the Garlic Capital's third murder this year, according to the Gilroy Police Department.

Station 55 celebrates new owners

On Oct. 12, the community welcomed Station 55’s new owners, Shauna and Charles Davis, to downtown Gilroy. Their restaurant is located at 55 Fifth Street. They received enthusiastic support from the fire department, friends, family and the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce.
