Long-term unemployment severed
Roughly 1.3 million Americans, including more than 8,800 Santa Clara County residents, are starting off the New Year on a bleak note after a federal program extending long-term unemployment benefits was shut down Saturday.
Fundraising to fuel re-opening
Grammy award-winning songwriter Don Henry will headline a Jan. 15 benefit concert to help raise funds for the planned re-opening of the historic Granada Theater in downtown Morgan Hill, according to Vice Chair Renee Carrillo of the Morgan Hill Granada Preservation Society.
Christmas Day homicide suspect charged with murder
A 21-year-old man was formally charged with murder in the Christmas Day killing of a woman who had a restraining order against him - marking the Garlic Capital's third murder this year, according to the Gilroy Police Department.
Station 55 celebrates new owners
On Oct. 12, the community welcomed Station 55’s new owners, Shauna and Charles Davis, to downtown Gilroy. Their restaurant is located at 55 Fifth Street. They received enthusiastic support from the fire department, friends, family and the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce.

Police blotter: Corporal injury of a spouse or cohabitant
The Gilroy Police Department responded to a variety of crimes this week, including a Christmas day murder, driving infractions, corporal injury and grand theft. Arrests were recorded in this week's GPD blotter from Dec. 12 to Dec. 26.

Christopher had two bad quarters against Brookside Christian, falling 53-40 to take second at the Bulldog Chase Saturday.
Hartman, Bowers lead second-half push to send Christopher into championship game at Bulldog Chase
Christopher rode the hot hand of Chad Hartman to complete a 10-point comeback to defeat Hillsdale 64-51 and advance to the championship game at the Bulldog Chase Friday.
