Baseball: Gilroy High retires LaCorte’s number

Frank LaCorte, a former Gilroy High and Gavilan College baseball star, had his No. 31 jersey retired by GHS on Saturday night during the Mustangs’ First Pitch Dinner and Silent Auction in the school’s Student Center.

Local schools to participate in PCA workshops

Schools from the Monterey Bay and Blossom Valley Athletic leagues will partner with Positive Coaching Alliance for a series of workshops funded by a $100,000 grant from the Peery Foundation to PCA, according to a PCA news release.

New affiliate for Windermere

Windermere Real Estate announced a new affiliate, Windermere Valley Properties, with a location in Morgan Hill at 17490 Depot St. Owner of Windermere Valley Properties, Chuck Vargas, is a real estate veteran. Starting out in 1992 with a single RE/MAX office in Gilroy, Vargas quickly grew his brokerage from five to 40 agents. In 1996, Vargas joined forces with Century 21/Premier Group, eventually overseeing five offices and two-hundred agents. Vargas currently serves on the board of directors for MLS.com and the Mexican American Golf Association.

Toys For Tots drive successful

Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, the leading real estate company in the Bay Area, announced today that it collected 5,112 toys and 2,152 coats this holiday season to benefit families in need throughout Northern California. The annual Toys for Tots and Operation: One Warm Coat collection campaigns this holiday season marked the 26th consecutive year that Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage has supported the efforts in partnership with the United States Marine Corps Reserve and several non-profit organizations throughout Northern California. The Gilroy office collected 172 toys and 98 coats, and the Morgan Hill office collected 100 toys and 150 coats.

Baseball: Rams sweep Falcons, go to 5-1

Gabe Katich pitched seven strong innings, and Kenny Hall and Brandt Burns drove in two runs each to lead Gavilan College’s baseball team to a 6-1 victory over West Hills College on Saturday at Keith Scrivner Field in Coalinga.

Public workshop March 4 on Coyote Valley preserve

The Santa Clara County Open Space Authority will have a public workshop March 4 to provide information and solicit input on how to facilitate and manage use and access to the Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve in south San Jose. 

City sales tax revenue up

The City of Gilroy has posted a 4.4 percent increase in the City's sales tax revenues for the third quarter of 2012 - compared with the same time last year - according to figures released by Joe Kline, Public Information Officer for the City.
