GILROY – Preparation wasn’t a problem for Gilroy High’s girls soccer team going into Friday’s game against visiting Notre Dame.

A renewed focus in practice on Thursday led to a 1-0 victory over the Spirits, putting the Mustangs at 3-0 in Tri-County Athletic League play.

Kasandra Kachakji took a pass from Ariana Carrillo with 10 minutes remaining in the contest and struck the ball true from the top of the box to score the game’s lone goal.

“The issue the game before was our preparation,” Gilroy coach Jose Hernandez said. “Everything we talked about, that I wasn’t pleased about, they fixed.”

Hernandez’ expectations are admittedly high considering the Mustangs won their TCAL contest against Alvarez on Wednesday 6-0. The coach’s concerns had to do with focus, as his team was held scoreless in the first half and was too forgiving on defense, allowing three shots on goal.

Notre Dame matched up much better with the Mustangs, Hernandez said, making Friday’s outcome something to build upon despite owning a smaller margin of victory than the game prior.

“Mentally, they were a little more prepared,” he said.

“In league, it’s a good start so far.”

Gilroy currently sits atop the TCAL standings and owns a 6-2-3 record entering Wednesday’s contest at Salinas (9-2 overall, 3-1 TCAL).

Boys’ Soccer

Gilroy High’s boys soccer team tied Palma 1-1 Thursday in Salinas.

The Chieftains’ Daniel Johnsen scored the game’s first goal, but Gilroy answered back later in the half when Ramiro Diaz assisted John Paul Sanchez for the equalizer.

A scoreless second half led to the second draw in a row for the Mustangs (7-2-5 overall, 1-0-2 TCAL). Palma went to 6-1-1 overall, 1-1-1 TCAL.

Gilroy will be back at home on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. when it hosts Salinas (2-7-2, 2-1-1).
