To buy yourself an extra hour go to the U.S. Post Office in Salinas at 1011 Post Drive that will remain open until 6 p.m. For last-second filers, two malls in San Jose – Eastridge and Oakridge – have post offices located inside that will be open until 9 p.m. April 15.
The 2009 income tax return must be postmarked by Thursday and if an extension is needed, use form 4868 to file taxes until Oct. 15. To avoid penalty, be certain to pay any taxes that are due April 15.
Thursday is also the last day to pay your state taxes to deflect penalties and interest, however, if an extension is approved for your federal filing a extension on state taxes is possible. Check with www.irs.gov for more information.
