Just to be clear, no tax increase needed to fix the sidewalks

Dear Editor,

With regard to the Dispatch article published on the Web site Feb. 12 concerning bonding for sidewalk repairs, I’d like to make it clear my plan does not seek to go the ballot for a tax increase to finance the repairs.

Any bond or financing mechanism used would be paid for by internal funds, without a tax increase to residents. I would under no circumstances support such a proposed tax levy.

Charreadas no different than the rodeos held in Salinas each year

Dear Editor,

I think it is wrong to ban charreadas. What is the difference between this kind of rodeo and the ones they have in Salinas every year? What kind of message does our Santa Clara County want to send to our outlying communities?

I have attended these events and they are very colorful and remind me of cultural richness they have contributed to our society. Many people attend these events and they come from all over the Bay Area.

In my opinion this is wrong. Their has been enough detrimental issues that have affected the Hispanic community it is wrong why does our county want to add more?

Keep the cadre of outstanding columnists in the print edition

Dear Editor,

One of the key reasons we’ve been loyal subscribers for 30-plus years is to show our support of a genuine community newspaper whose staff make it their business to cover all aspects of life at our end of the Santa Clara Valley. Your reporters and your columnists, especially, hone our critical thinking skills and do so much to touch our hearts – whether it’s to warm them or direct our attention to crucial human needs in our midst.

May The Dispatch never become a clone of the many publications that mostly cut and paste from the Associated Press and other such sources, thus silencing the voices that speak for all of our local concerns.

Keep Kat Teraji and Chuck Flagg and Dina Campeau and Ben Anderson and Lisa Pampuch and all the rest in hard copy. To relegate them to online only will drain the lifeblood from your newspaper.

Mike and Claudia Salewske, Gilroy

Editor’s note: First, thank you for the supreme compliment and, second, know that in difficult economic times we are doing our level best to keep as many of our columnists in the print

edition as possible. (See page A5)
