Dear Editor:

I live in the Northwest Quad where the city administrator believes we do not need adequate fire protection. One of my neighbors notified me that on Saturday and early Sunday morning there were a couple of fires. Both of them right next door to the brand new fire station. One was a little grass fire and the second was a bedroom fire.

I also understand that the crew from the Sunrise Station responded on foot and never took their brand new rescue/ambulance out of the station. Why did we purchase this ambulance? How long did it take for the fire engine on Wren Avenue to arrive? How long did it take for the fire engine on Chestnut Street to arrive? What exactly was that rescue ambulance able to do?

So, I guess I should move to another area of the city where there is adequate fire protection, or ask our city administrator, what is your plan? Give the citizens of Gilroy, who pay taxes and just happen to live in Northwest Quad, a definite plan of when they will receive the same services as those in the rest of the city.

Or will someone have to get hurt or die for the Council to take action? Is this how it will be when we begin the southwest development? Will the city be struggling to find funds for fire protection at the last minute, due to poor planning?

What about the proposed addition to the Eagle Ridge development? Are those taxpaying citizens outside normal response times? What happens when Council approves that development? Let’s build and build and build and forget about our core services.

When the fire station has its grand opening I believe we all should show up and see exactly what type of service we are getting, or what we are not getting? Maybe we should call it an “ambulance station?”
