They were not the times and distances Gilroy athletes hoped for Wednesday as they wrapped up their Tri-County Athletic League regular season.
But then, the howling winds made it difficult for both teams. The Mustang girls were too deep for Alvarez, winning decisively 94-40. The boys, on the other hand, generally aren’t deeper than any opponent. And yet they were able to slip past the Eagles 65-64 for their first league win.
“It was a real windy day,” GHS coach Jeff Myers said. “I was happy we were able to get the victory, but it was not one of our better overall performances.”
Ironically, the fact that the Gilroy boys scored nine points in the pole vault contributed greatly to the win. In past years, it was always the Mustangs giving away nine points because they were unable to field a team. This time, Alvarez suffered a similar fate.
The Eagles did get an inspirational performance from Mark Bluchar, the meet’s only triple winner. Blucher won the 800 in 2:08, the 1,600 in 4:44 and 3,200 in 10:08.
Steven Heisey was a double winner for Gilroy, taking the 200 and 400. Ismael Gutierrez’s 137-foot discus throw surpassed his previous best by five feet.
“An amazing throw under the conditions,” Myers said. “The discus was wobbling everywhere.”
Derek Pesta was second in the 1,600 and 3,200, Juan Velasquez was second in the 800 and third in the 1,600, and Dante Fullard was second in the triple jump and third in the long jump.
The girls had three double winners. Ariana Vera won the 100 and 200, Elise Ogle won the 800 and 1,600, and Megan McAvoy won the high jump and triple jump, and finished second to teammate Loreal Resngit in the long jump. Kathleen Miller won the 3,200 and was second in the 1,600.
The results left the girls at 4-2 and the boys at 1-5.
“They did what they had to do to get ready for the TCAL meet,” Myers said.
The trials are at 1:30pm Tuesday at North Salinas. The finals are 3pm Friday at Gilroy.
