A 16-year-old boy, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered a severe head injury after he fell while skateboarding on a steep hill off Mantelli Drive Tuesday night around 6 p.m., according to the Gilroy Police Department.

The teen had to be flown by emergency medical helicopter to a Bay Area trauma center out of the neighborhood near Lavender Way and Saffron Court, which are off Wild Iris Drive in the northwest section of the Mantelli Drive area.

The steep selection of hills are popular with thrill-seeking skateboarders, who race down what some tout as “Heart Attack Hill” or “Mantelli Hill,” though the injured 16-year-old and a friend were skating down other just-as-dangerous side streets, said Sgt. Chad Gallacinao.

Gallacinao said there’s no update on his condition at this time.
