San Jose – Thursday night was a roller coaster ride for the Live Oak Acorns, who lost to Oak Grove 43-20.

Before the game began, Live Oak received word that they may receive a forfeit win because of a rules violation from Branham. But head coach Rick Booth said he was told by the Blossom Valley Athletic League commissioner that no one benefited from the forfeit.

As a result, Live Oak falls to 5-5 overall and 2-5 in Mount Hamilton division play.

Oak Grove finishes with a unbeaten regular season at 9-0-1 and 7-0 and won the BVAL title.

Key turnovers cost the Acorns chances to score. Oak Grove, whose only blemish was a tie against St. Francis in the first game of the season, took advantage to earn the win.

In the first half, the Acorns outgained the Eagles 271 to 207 in total yards.

But a fumbled toss on the second game of the play, and an interception with less than a minute to play in the second quarter killed the Acorns‚ momentum. Oak Grove converted the two turnovers into 13 points.

Live Oak managed to keep the game close in the first half. Trailing 13-0 in the second quarter, Victor Kalata ran for five yards and the score.

On the insuing kick off, Oak Grove’s Stacey Long went more than 80 yards to put the Eagles up 20-7.

Kevin Abbott, who collected 195 yards on the ground, scored the two other touchdowns for the Acorns, including a 72-yard scamper in the second quarter.
