DEAR EDITOR:
This is in response to the “Officer Justified In Dog Shooting” editorial.
I do not understand your apologetic and sympathetic tone when talking about the owners of the aggressive dog.
There is simply no excuse why this potentially dangerous animal was allowed to escape from its yard. I find it difficult to comprehend that our police officers have to defend their actions. They did the right thing by shooting this dog. It takes little imagination to think of the carnage this large and aggressive animal could have caused.
The owner of the dog should be held responsible for allowing such a dangerous animal to escape. Cities have to start going after obnoxious dog owners like this one with heavy fines and legal action. If the offense is repeated then the animal in question should be impounded and destroyed.
I am sick and tired of dog owners whose animals have maimed, or even killed humans, telling the tale of how loving and gentle their animal has always been. Having had many dogs of different breeds throughout my life I know about the fear factor. The tiniest dog with the sweetest temperament can become aggressive when confronted by someone who is afraid of him. I would be afraid if I were to encounter a large dog I did not know, loose on the street.

Editor’s Note: And we thought, “When faced with a barking, charging,150-pound rottweiler that’s 20 feet away and closing, we have no problem with a police officer defending himself or herself with deadly force,” made our sympathies quite clear.
