It’s time for Bud Ogden to add another accomplishment to the resume.
On Wednesday night, Gilroy High School’s varsity basketball coach was inducted into his third Hall of Fame. Already a member of the athletic HOF for Lincoln High School and Santa Clara University, Ogden was recognized for his athletic prowess, along with his brother Ralph, when the two were inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony at the HP Pavilion.
The pair both starred at Lincoln High before taking SCU to two “Elite Eight” appearances in the NCAA tournament in 1968 and 1969. Both were also good enough to play in the NBA before going down different paths. Bud became a teacher and coach at Valley Christian before coming to Gilroy while Ralph played and coached in Germany for the better the better part of three decades.
While the Ogdens aren’t the first siblings to be inducted together, they are the first brothers.
“I’m not sure it’s sunk in yet,” Bud said before the ceremony Wednesday afternoon.
According to the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame’s Web site, Bud still owns the SCU single-game scoring record of 55 points, which he accomplished against Pepperdine in 1968. He also ranks in the school’s top-10 list for scoring and rebounding.
During his senior year, Bud scored 18.2 points per game, which still stands as the third-highest total in SCU history.
