Weather reports show temperatures topping 100 degrees this weekend, and a federal weather service has issued a heat warning targeted at children, the elderly and the sick for Santa Clara Valley.

The mercury rose near 90 degrees early Friday afternoon, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted 102 degrees Saturday and 100 degrees Sunday with nighttime lows only expected to reach the mid-60s to mid-70s.

The national weather authority also issued a warning Friday that will go into effect 11 a.m. Saturday and expire 8 p.m. Sunday. It encouraged the old and young to seek shade and air conditioning during the days and to wear hats and light-weight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothes.

“Be especially careful by drinking plenty of water and seeking a cooler location for the day,” the warning read.

Meteorologists blamed the heat throughout the San Francisco Bay interior on a strong ridge of high pressure building over the west coast.
