One of two fugitives who escaped from the Santa Clara County Jail was caught in Antioch Tuesday night when he fell through the ceiling of his sister’s home, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department.
Laron Campbell, 26, of Palo Alto was arrested, along with his sister, Marcaysha Alexander, 24, who was taken on suspicion of aiding the fugitive.
The U.S. Marshall’s office had staked out Alexander’s home looking for her brother, deputies reported.
Campbell and Regelio Chavez, 33, of San Jose, sawed through the steel bars in the second floor of the old part of the Main Jail building in San Jose at 11 p.m. the night before Thanksgiving. Like something from an old movie, they used bed sheets to get down to the ground. The case has attracted national attention.
Campbell was arrested in 2015 for robbery, false imprisonment, criminal threats and firearms violations.
Deputies search the Days Inn in Gilroy earlier in the week acting on a tip that Chavez had been there. He was gone when they arrived and they arrested 35-year-old Emily Vaca on suspicion of aiding him by driving him around the county.
Chavez was booked in August on charges of burglary, extortion, false imprisonment, criminal threats and firearms violations.
He remains at large and the sheriff is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
