Gilroy – In the meet that mattered most, Samantha Nussbaumer came through.

At the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL) South division gymnastics finals at Twisters Gym in Mountain View on Wednesday, Nussbaumer scored an 8.65 on floor exercise, high enough to qualify for today’s Central Coast Section meet.

“Samantha, she executed all her requirements and had the strongest routine skill-wise, so she made it through,” said gymnastics head coach Nicki Anagnoston. “She did her job.”

“(Nussbaumer) has one of the stronger floor routines,” Anagnoston added. “So we were hoping for her to get a good routine and just have a good night and she did.”

Meghan Signorotti, Erica Law and seniors Adrienne Etienne (all-around) and Stephanie Orth (bars and floor) also competed, but did not qualify for CCS.

Last year, Gilroy qualified for CCS as a team. But because the ‘Stangs did not have enough girls for a full team this year, only individuals could qualify for the section final.

Anagnoston thought Law also had a good shot at qualifying in floor based on past scores, but Wednesday didn’t turn out to be her night.

“Her routine didn’t go as planned. It was unfortunate,” Anagnoston said. “It was just one of those nights where it doesn’t go as planned. But that’s just kind of the nature of sports.”

The 8.65 isn’t the highest Nussbaumer has scored on floor this year, so she has room for improvement at the CCS meet, also to be held at Twisters.

“She’s scored higher

in the past, but it was a solid score for her,” Anagnoston said. “We expect at CCS for competition to be very tough.

“We’re looking to go and have a clean routine and put up a solid score. That’s what were focusing on.”

At least Nussbaumer is healthy, which is more than Anagnoston can say for herself. She suffered a broken nose Monday when she took an elbow to the face while spotting a gymnast.

The CCS meet kicks off at 4:30pm in Mountain View.
