Gilroy – One hundred holes of golf later, Don DeLorenzo has over $2000 in pledges for his “golf-a-thon” and $1200 has already been collected for the Gilroy Little League Softball World Series team’s travel fund.

DeLorenzo, PGA golf professional at Gilroy Golf Course, played a monumental round of golf Friday to help cover the thousands of dollars in travel costs incurred by the Garlic Girls, who were honored in Gilroy Saturday with a parade celebrating their sixth place finish in last week’s World Series in Portland, Ore.

Pledging on a per-hole basis or simply contributing a flat sum, dozens of community members threw their support behind the Little Leaguers and DeLorenzo as he steamrolled through his home course Friday, playing his first hole at 6:50am and finishing up with his 100th around a quarter past four.

“I was thinking, ‘Hey, if I can raise $1,000, that’d be great,’ but the community stepped up once again,” DeLorenzo said raising more from the golf-a-thon then he’d anticipated.

The golf pro was happy to have company in his quest, as close friend Jeff Wilson turned up on the fifth hole to make the golf-a-thon a pairing, and to keep score.

DeLorenzo managed to notch the century at 4-under par, tallying a 74 on his first 18 holes, then settling down for a 67, 70, 68 and 68, and finishing the final 12 holes 1-under.

“I putted pretty well, considering I wasn’t taking a lot of time on the greens,” he said. “Sometimes we’d take a practice swing, sometimes not.”

DeLorenzo’s daughter Bria, in her second year at Notre Dame College in Belmont on a softball scholarship, came up through Gilroy Little League, playing on several All-Star teams herself. The four-year starter at Gilroy High plays for the San Jose Strikkers in the college offseason.
