Dear Editor:

I was a little worried seeing a headline on a Dennis Taylor column that appeared to be criticizing a recent letter I wrote. But then I read this:

“Let’s rail on The Dispatch for its editorial opinions, if they rile you enough to write letters, but the young reporters bringing you the news are dedicated to telling a story in an unbiased manner and deserve that benefit of doubt.”

Whew! That was a relief! Because I looked at my letter and didn’t see a SINGLE thing that attacked news articles, “young” reporters or any other portion of The Dispatch EXCEPT that coming from the editorial section. Close call!

It was helpful for Dennis to inform us that FOX NEWS is not right-wing and NPR isn’t left-wing. I agree with him completely. Well, except for the part about FOX.

It reminded me of the FEW funny things I heard in reference to the recall election. I don’t remember who said it, but it went something like this: “Opponents of Schwartzenegger have helped to advance his legitimacy in at least ONE arena. They are the first of his critics EVER to refer to him as an ACTOR.”

By the same token, I have to say that belonging to the Sierra Club and being hated by local conservatives doesn’t make one a liberal.

Indeed, after he QUICKLY joined with the right-wing to trash the local unions I called him on it. I sent him an email entitled “With Liberals Like These, Who Needs Conservatives?”

In pure Dispatch fashion, he never responded; believing, as apparently the editors do, that he is not accountable to lowly readers.

Taylor has been advanced as a liberal commentator. If indeed he is, I have to say he is REALLY behind in his work. A horrifying movement of radical deconstruction of progress is growing stronger every day, and Dennis Taylor has to write us a column about “kids these days and the kooky ways they dress.” The world is on FIRE and he has to elbow his way into the line of conservatives whining about Gilroy First!

OK. Dennis has his priorities and I have mine.

But while the pain of my comments still squirm in local minds, I’d like folks to remember that the editorial group I am criticizing is in charge of THREE local newspapers (does everyone know this?)

IDENTICAL editorials on the last election appeared in The DISPATCH, the HOLLISTER FREE LANCE and the MORGAN HILL TIMES (are there others?)

So we are talking about an entity which helps to SHAPE OPINION across a rather large corner of the South Santa Clara and North San Benito County area. Is this insignificant? Maybe to “professional liberals” but not to me.
