Present and Future Motoring in Gilroy

Speaking of people driving while talking on their cell phones,
yesterday I was driving down Kern in front of Rod Kelley Elementary
School.
Calling for trouble

Dear Red Phone:

Speaking of people driving while talking on their cell phones, yesterday I was driving down Kern in front of Rod Kelley Elementary School. There is a stop sign right in front of the school. As I stopped at the stop sign, this young guy, talking on his cell phone, drove RIGHT THROUGH the stop sign! It didn’t even phase him that there was a stop sign there! Now think if this were NEXT week, when school is back in session and that guy failed to stop at the stop sign! We’d be reading about yet another fatality on Gilroy’s streets due to drivers NOT paying attention. Maybe someone can put up a sign with a picture of a child size coffin, and the front of it should read “WHO’S NEXT?”

Red Phone:

Dear Calling Out Drivers:

Red Phone will not condone any small coffins out on the street. Instead maybe you could get a bumper sticker with some wisdom to share like, “Hang Up and Drive!”

Pack rats nesting in gilroy

Dear Red Phone:

My wife and I used to live in a nice neighborhood. I just want to know what is wrong with all these people that keep their homes in the front yard very messy. What is wrong with these people who keep their homes junky?

I see people with a bunch of junk in the front yard. I think Gilroy is such a beautiful place to live and everyone here should keep their homes clean.

Everyone here should keep their homes clean instead of having all their junk everywhere. It would be nice if the people of Gilroy would keep their homes clean instead of having to drive by and look at all of their junk in front of their homes. What can be done about this?

Red Phone:

Dear Cleanup Crew:

It’s hard to say what’s wrong with these people. Red Phone can’t really answer that, but it can surmise that perhaps some are elderly or disabled and unable to attend to things, or that they are too busy with their day-to-day to worry about it. Who knows, maybe they’re just plain lazy, or don’t know there are rules.

Or, maybe they are gianormous pack rats. Pack rats, interestingly enough, are actual creatures of the genus Neotoma, noted for their habit of collecting bright, shiny objects and leaving other objects, such as nuts or pebbles, in their place.

Pack rats decorate their nests with these objects.

If you feel like you’re living among pack rats, you can call the city to enforce the nuisance abatement code.

According to city code, items such as vehicles that aren’t in running condition, refrigerators, car parts, furniture, scrap metal, weeds and garbage are are illegal to have in your yard for an extended period of time.

If you have a specific complaint for something to be removed in the city limits, call 846-0320 if it involves a vehicle, and for other nuisances call 846-0430.
