Dear Editor,
Gilroy Las Madres would like to assure Susan M. Baker that the garage sale signs are coming down. We offer our apologies to Ms. Baker and the community for not removing the signs immediately after our sale. Our intentions were good – yet our members have one, two, even three children under 5 years old, so sometimes our good intentions do get waylaid.
Las Madres members certainly intend to be good citizens and neighbors. In addition to providing support and education to mothers of young children, Las Madres has a strong record of giving our time, talents and money to our community.
We’ve donated thousands of dollars to local charities, including City Team, the Gilroy Library, Gilroy parks, the Red Cross and Gilroy Military Families. This year, we have chosen two charities to help: Rebekah Children’s Services, a Gilroy organization that offers healthcare to children in need, and Helping After Neonatal Death (HAND), a Bay Area nonprofit group that provides resources to families who have lost a baby before, during or after birth.
Last month, a Las Madres book fair netted $100 in books for Rebekah Children’s Services. In connection with our garage sale last week, members donated hundreds of dollars of merchandise to Santa Clara County Health and Human Care Programs, which help children in foster care. Further, Las Madres annual fall and spring garage sales help provide local families with affordable children’s clothing, furniture and toys.
We hope Ms. Baker and the community pardon us for our delay in removing our garage sale signs. Las Madres working hard to support Gilroy parents and our community.
Barbie Mazza,
Gilroy Las Madres Council Co-President
