For the Gilroy field hockey team, Wednesday offered a little payback.
It came in the form of a dominating 3-0 victory at York, the only league team to defeat the Lady Mustangs during last season’s T-CAL championship run.
“We actually talked about it with the girls,” co-head coach Adam Gemar said. “We were kind of hoping they’d take it personally.”
Apparently they did.
Gilroy outshot its rival, 27-0. By Gemar’s estimation, York possessed the ball on the GHS side of the field for “maybe two minutes.”
“It was Gilroy Domination Day,” Gemar declared. “All around, we were just better. Our midfielders played better. Our forwards played better than their defense.
“We just overpowered them.”
Plenty of players stood out for the Lady Mustangs.
Junior defender Heather Link was given the game stick as the team’s MVP. Seniors Shante Mancera and Elena Ramirez and sophomore Kelly Perkins scored the team’s goals.
And GIlroy’s midfield of Mancera, Meg Perkins and Karlie Sandoval “shut the door” on York, Gemar said.
“As coaches, we were very pleased with the effort,” he added.
Next up for the Lady Mustangs is this weekend’s Willow Glen Jamboree in San Jose.
Gilroy opens with today’s 4pm match against Corning High and follows that up with an evening match against University High of San Francisco.
Tomorrow morning, the Lady Mustangs will get their second chance for revenge when they take on St. Francis, the team that knocked them out of the CCS playoffs in 2003.
