who moved the pots: “I’m calling to let you know that in front of Victoria’s Mexican Restaurant there are planters right in front of the sidewalk and they are obstructing the walking area. They do not belong there I don’t think. They belong in front of some of the other businesses there. Somebody moved them.

“I can’t get by there with my grandchild in a stroller. My mother sometimes walks through there and it’s very hard for her. She’s an older woman.

“I’d appreciate it if you could ask them to put those things back where they belong. Thank you.”

Well, caller, the Red Phone feels obligated to tell you that those planters are where they belong. We contacted Carmen, manager of Victoria’s, and was surprised to hear that the planters are not new. Rather, they’ve been in place for years.

“The landlord remodeled about 3 years ago and put the planters in,” she said. “Maybe people are noticing them because there are flowers blooming in them now.”

When asked if they are a permanent fixture, the jovial Carmen said, “They weigh like 500 pounds and it would take (heavy-lifting machinery) to get them out.” And she added it would be up to the landlord.

welcome to gilroy: “Yeah, hi. I recently moved to Gilroy and am not really familiar with certain things. I got a subscription to this paper and saw this column asking people to call the number with questions or comments.

“Well my question is this. I know I could go online or through the phone book to find this out, but could you list the numbers for a couple necessary places around town that new people might not be real familiar with but that we might need? It would be nice to have them all listed in one spot, so maybe we can cut out the section and keep it on the fridge or in my purse to have it handy.

“Maybe like the post office and DMV and how about the city office? And is there a YMCA here?

“Thanks a lot, I’d appreciate it if you’ll do this for me and anyone else that might need some basic information.”

note: To the caller who let us know about the scratched up Dispatch dispenser at Sixth and Carmel, there’s good news.

You’ll be happy to know that Scott Levander, manager of the Dispatch circulation department, told the Red Phone that the plastic in the dispenser has officially been replaced. Now you can see the day’s top news nice and clear.
