Puzzles are a great activity to share with your child, and can provide inexpensive entertainment for the whole family. Solving puzzles helps sharpen the mind, encourages concentration and develops logic skills. Puzzle and game resources are available at the library, including what is called “picture puzzles.” Picture puzzles ask the reader to find patterns in a picture, or find a picture amongst other objects. These types of puzzles help children develop strategies for searching for and isolating certain patterns, colors and shapes.

Some to share with your child include:

– “Where’s That Cat?”

by Barbara Brenner

This series for younger readers also includes books about insects, reptiles, and fish. Each book includes information about the animals, and animals hidden in the illustrations.

– “Where’s Waldo”

by Martin Handford

The classic series that asks readers to find Waldo, as he travels to various crowded places around the world.

– “Fun with …”

by Peter Patilla

This series uses picture puzzles to explore the concepts of shapes, sizes, and colors.

– “I Spy”

by Walter Wick

Another perennial favorite, this series asks the reader in rhyming text to find objects hidden in photographs.

Many magazines for children include puzzles, like the following:

– Cricket

– Highlights

– Odyssey

– Ranger Rick

The library also has puzzle CD-ROMs, including the “I Spy” series, chess and crosswords. These items, along with picture puzzles and other game and puzzle related items, will be on display in the library lobby through February.
