This year coming back to school at Gilroy High was a little bit different than other years. The school had a bunch of new, and much needed improvements and also a new class schedule was introduced.

On the first day of school it was a big shocker to find out what the new schedule was for our classes. We have “blue days” and “white days.”

On the “blue days” we go to our odd classes, first, third, and fifth. On the “white days” we go to our even classes, second, forth, and sixth.

The different days switch off every other day. So in one week we might only have a set of classes two times that week and the other set three times, but then the next week it will be the opposite and it all evens out. Each class is an hour and 58 minutes.

This was all so weird for us because we were used to the year before having “Monday schedules” every Monday where we had all of our classes in one day, including tutorial, and also having classes that were only an hour and 35 minutes long. I was thinking, “Wow, one hour and 58 minutes for one class! How can anyone stay in one place and pay attention for that long without losing their mind?”

I soon came to realize it really wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I don’t really feel like the classes are that much longer compared to our hour and 35 minute classes last year. I think it’s better for the elective classes because you get more time to work on your projects. However, for classes like math it seems like the class will never end.

As a whole, I like the new schedule because you have a class then brunch, then a class, then lunch, and then another class. Then you get to go home. I like it because it’s just like “Ok, boom boom boom, get it done, and you are finished for the day.”

Not everyone is as happy about the new schedule as I am. Almost everyone I talked to had something bad to say about it. Mike Sheleman, a senior, said, “I don’t like it because the periods are extremely long and after an hour it becomes sleepy time.”

Brooks Wilson, also a senior, said agreeingly, “The schedule is horrible.”

I had one almost positive quote from Michelle Pirozzoli, a senior, who said “I do like only having three classes a day, but I miss tutorial.” I think it will take a little bit longer for everyone to get use to the change and maybe even start to like it.

Not only did the class schedule change over summer but so did the look of the campus. I was amazed to walk on to the Gilroy High campus the first day of school and see new grass and new trees. The only thing bad about the new grass is that we aren’t suppose to walk on it yet.

There are signs everywhere saying, “Please do not walk on the grass.” Also, over the summer, the roofs and buildings were painted. On some walls the Gilroy High Mustang logo was painted as well. Other additions included night lamps, new trees, and tanbark in the planters. New sinks and lockers were installed in the locker rooms, and they even painted the insides of the bathrooms.

I think the school looks great! The grass looks really good but once they let students start walking on it again I think it will just get trampled but let’s hope not. I really like the Mustang logo on the walls. It gives the school more spirit.

I am glad they made all of these improvements because I think the school looks very nice.

Here are some opinions of other Gilroy High students.

Callan Romesberg told me “The school looks pretty nice but I think the night lights are a waste of money.”

Miguel Maldonado, a senior, said, “I think the colors are dumb, they don’t match. They should have put the grass in earlier so we could walk on it now.”

David Bress, a sophomore, said jokingly “Ya, it’s not bad, but who picks the colors around here, Papa Smurf?”

Well, if he did pick the colors, I think for a cartoon character, it was a job well done.
