Gilroy – Police caught a fleeing Gilroy driver Wednesday night when his car broke down on Highway 156, following a brief high-speed chase. After Jerry Hendrickson, 44, ran a red light at the intersection of Camino Arroyo and Highway 152, police signaled for him to stop. Instead, Hendrickson veered onto U.S. 101 south, leading one Gilroy officer on a 80-mile-per-hour chase down the freeway to Highway 156, where the California Highway Patrol joined the chase. Near Bixby Road, Hendrickson’s car broke down.
A Gilroy police sergeant and three additional officers sped to the scene, where Hendrickson refused to get out of the car. Police shot pepper balls – powdery balls that cause a reaction like pepper spray – through the windows.
At 11:30pm, Hendrickson was arrested on suspicion of running a stop light, causing a police pursuit, resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license.
Police said Hendrickson is a transient living in Gilroy.
