With the hottest part of the summer still ahead, you’ll want to make sure your house is kept cool. Here are some portable options you may want to consider.

You can always bring out the portable fans and stick them at various locations throughout the house.

But if you want to have more than hot air blown around, you’ll want to consider a portable air conditioning unit.

There are two basic forms – air coolers and the actual air conditioners, according to a tutorial at doityourself.com.

Air coolers are also know as swamp coolers because of the moisture they release into the air. However, air coolers still can absorb heat to blow more cool air out than they draw in – usually cooling the air 12 to 15 degrees. These units are less expensive than portable air conditioning units and easier to maintain.

On the other hand, portable air conditioners can keep a room cooler, but they require a vent to the outside in order to remove the hot air.

Air conditioners are different in that they remove moisture from the air and collect it in a tray. Most of the new modules have a switch that will shut off once the reservoir is full.

Next week we’ll discuss more options for staying cool this summer.
