A 30-point offensive explosion in the first half of a football
game is a notable accomplishment.
So when the Mustangs followed up their impressive scoring
display last Friday against Live Oak with a six-point second half,
no one really noticed – especially since they were in command of
the game.
The Mustangs may not have the luxury of having a sub-par half
tonight as they face Archbishop Mitty out of the West Catholic

The Mustangs may not have the luxury of having a sub-par half tonight as they face Archbishop Mitty out of the West Catholic Athletic League.
Sure, Mitty had one of its worst seasons, finishing 1-9 in 2008, and GHS buried them 62-13 in the teams’ season opener, but the Monarchs pummeled Las Lomas 41-7 last week, showing no resemblance of last season.
“The way I’m looking at it is that they are going to be a lot stronger than us up front,” said GHS coach Greg Garcia after practice Wednesday. “What we do, by retreating so much, making them run, it’s going to tire them out and take them out of their game.”
The Mustangs will look to keep the flow of the game up-tempo, with quick plays using Nick Marra in the shot gun. Marra completed passes to six different receivers against the Acorns. Accessing the short passes from sideline to sideline this week to keep Mitty on its toes will open up the field for the deep ball.
“We thrive on (tempo),” Garcia said.
In contrast to the Mustangs spread attack, the Monarchs grind it out between the has marks with bruising run plays. Mitty amasses 252 yards rushing last week. behind a foursome of running backs who each had more than 60 yards on the ground.
Tonight’s game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kick off at Foothill College in Los Altos.
n Christopher High’s junior varsity football team plays St. Josephs High School of Santa Maria at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex. Start time is 6 p.m. The Cougars are looking for their first win of the year. They came up just short last week against Scotts Valley 20-16.
n The JV Mustangs face Archbishop Mitty at 4 p.m. at Foothill College. The Mustangs head into the contest with a 1-0 record.
