SOFTBALL
Cougars top Seaside, go 1-1 at Notre Dame Tourney
Christopher scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth innings to cruise past Seaside 10-1 Thursday at home.
Already leading 2-1, the Cougars ensured the Spartans wouldn’t get any closer. Michaela Decker kicked off the sixth with a single and got in scoring position when Julianna Santiago singled to left field. Brittany Souza reached on a fielder’s choice to score Decker, but Santiago was out at second.
Nikki Villanueva doubled to score Souza (4-1) and reached third on a Mack Holt single. Villanueva ran home on a throw which would walk Karli Martinez. Holt scored when Pati Soria doubled to centerfield (6-1).Â
Martinez scored on a throw to home and Brook Loesch singled to put runners on the corners for Christopher. Morgan England doubled on a fly to left field to score both the runners (9-1). She scored two plays later on a throw to home for the final.
Soria led the team, going 3 for 4 with an RBI, a double and two runs.Â
Holt went the distance and struck out six Spartans. She allowed no earned runs on three hits and four walks.
Christopher topped Aptos 4-2, but lost to Notre Dame 3-1 at the ND tourney Saturday. Souza was a perfect 2 for 2 with a run against Aptos, while Holt had two RBIs and a run and a double off one hit. McKenna Parks and Loesch were the only two Cougars with a hit against Notre Dame.
Christopher (12-4, 1-2) will play San Benito at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Veteran’s Park.
SWIMMING
Holm nabs CCS qualifier, Cougars top MVC
Jacob Holm was a blazing 1:11.41 faster than his competition in the 500-meter freestyle — and that landed him a Central Coast Section qualifying time.
Holm’s achievement was just part of another stellar performance by the Cougars who swept their meet against Monte Vista Christian at home Friday. The boys won 106-68, while the girls won 110-66.
Holm was also 18 seconds better than the second place finisher in the 200-m free and was one-fourth of the first place 200-m medley relay team.Â
Natalie Garcia shined for the girls with a first place finish in the 200-m free — 20 seconds better than the next best swimmer.
Christopher will break this week, but return to action at 3:30 p.m. April 18 at Watsonville for the season finale.Â
BASEBALL
Cougars drop two to San Benito
San Benito strengthened its lead atop the Monterey Bay League – Gabilan Division with back-to-back wins over Christopher Thursday and Friday.
The Balers won 3-2 over Christopher Thursday before picking up a 5-1 victory Friday.Â
The Cougars lone run came in the top of the fourth when Brian Easton drove in Brennan Wilson.Â
Makaio Duyao was the losing pitcher for Christopher, allowing three runs — two earned — on four hits through four innings of work. He also walked two and struck out two.
Christopher held a 2-0 lead heading into the final frame of Thursday’s contest, but San Benito put an end to that. The Balers posted three runs in the top of the seventh for the victory.
Kevin Willard and Duyao both had two hits a piece and a double in that game. Willard also had an RBI and a walk. Wilson scored both of the Cougars’ runs.Â
Tyler Fhurong was the losing pitcher, allowing two runs on one hit through one-third inning.
