The Cougars, winners of six straight matches – including three-set victories against Lincoln, Gonzales and Alisal on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, respectively – entering Friday’s crosstown rivalry encounter with Gilroy High, are now winners of seven in a row.
CHS upended the Mustangs 25-18,25-12, 25-12 for the school’s first victory over GHS in an sport at the varsity level, Cougars (8-5) head coach Tom Schatz said.
Senior Merrett Brown led the way with a team-high 13 kills, senior Aly Olvera had seven kills, Claudia Ferreria four, and Paulina Vo-Griffin one to accompany her six aces.

Despite the loss, head coach Paul Wells said he was pleased with another match in which his first-year varsity squad showed improvements over its last.
“I thought we did an excellent job in all four quarters,” Wells said, whose Cougars fall to 0-4 in Tri-County Athletic League Valley Division play. “They are improving massively and they are starting to get pissed. So it’s time to make progress.”
